Raymond Thurmond of Lavonia, Georgia held his wife and four children 9-14 hostage for three years in a filthy, roach infested trailer. They were allowed to leave only once to visit her parents at Easter.
"It was pretty much a virtual prison," Lavonia Police Lt. Missy Collins said Wednesday. "He controlled what they ate, what they did. He controlled pretty much everything."
He beat the children with a steel toed boat. And he beat and raped his wife according to the children who could hear everything going on. He is being held on charges of rape, child abuse, and false imprisonment. Of course the neighbors had no clue.
The police are awaiting the results of psychological tests to determine whether or not to charge the wife. There is evidence that she suffered from battered women's syndrome and that the family was locked in bedrooms while Thurmond was at work. But she somehow managed to come forward when her husband said he was leaving her for another woman and would be dropping by to bring them food. So maybe she should be charged with something, at least with not cleaning the apartment. She was well enough to come forward when she thought the fool was leaving her.
The children, who are underweight and malnourished, are in government custody, and investigators describe them as shy, but not completely socially undeveloped. They didn't attend school except for the oldest for a short time.
