Captive Family Update

Raymond Daniel Thurmond of Lavonia has not committed rape, held family members against their will or abused his children, said Joel Shiver, who heads the public defender’s office for Georgia’s Northern Judicial District. The four-county region comprises Franklin, Hart, Madison and Oglethorpe counties.
“We categorically deny all the charges,” Shivers said. “We’re going to let the judicial system take care of these charges.”
But several women from Thurmond's past have come forward to say that he abused them too. Investigators don't say if the past refers to a time before he was married or while he was married. Remember that the wife escaped after her husband told her he was leaving her for another woman.
More details are also coming out about the children. The three oldest children, ages 12, 13, and 14, are from other relationships. (Where are their mothers?) They were supposed to be home schooled but Thurmond never bought school supplies. Their educational material was a dictionary. Police believe the children mostly watched cartoons on television. Investigators said none of the children had any sense of time or dates. They said two of them have speech impediments.Investigators described the children as polite, soft-spoken, and shy. They said that the children were protective of their mother, and it appeared that she had "nurtured" them. The children said that their father kept the windows covered so they couldn't look out side. The children each had two sets of clothing.
