A father abandoned his nine children ages 1 to 17 at a Nebraska hospital under state Safe Haven laws. The father has not been named. And this is not the first time this has happened in Nebraska. There are reports of two teenagers and a preteen having been abandoned under the same laws.
The problem is that while most Safe Haven laws were written so that infants under 1 would be left in safe places, Nebraska's law says "child". So parents can leave children under 19 (Nebraska's age of majority)at say a hospital, church, or police or fire station. There are plans to amend the law during the next legislative session.
But not all politicians think there needs to be a change. "All children deserve our protection," said Sen. Tom White to Huffington Post, who helped broaden the measure. "If we save one child from being abused, it's well, well worth it."
I'm all for Safe Haven laws (my grandmother was abandoned on a porch as a newborn), but this isn't what the law was designed for.
