Nebraska Safe Haven Laws A Problem

Nebraska didn't really think through the Safe Haven laws they passed. At least sixteen children have been left since the law was passed, the majority of them over the age of one. At least 11 of the kids were not infants.

A father left his five boys and four girls at a hospital. And two unrelated boy 11 and 15 were left. Parents have been dropping off uncontrollable teens instead of leaving unwanted infants. Can you imagine being aware that you are being left possibly forever by your parent. It has to damage the child forever. It's not like the police and foster care coming and taking you away. Then you can at least pretend that your parents wanted you, but were just idiots. Being abandoned when you are old enough to understand is just a sign that your parents don't care and are tired of you.

And even if the parents leave their children, they can come back and try to regain custody. Because abandoning a child on a whim doesn't automatically terminate parental rights. A court could decide to return a child if the parents ask for them back.
