I know that it is parentally incorrect to allow children to play with plastic toys. And heaven forbid if it is a plastic sexist toy. So Girl Gourmet is probably being publicly shunned by thousands of parents, who will be sneaking out to buy it for their daughters at Christmas (and hiding it from their equally stuffy friends.)
I think the Girl Gourmet is a cute toy, but I am just first generation middle class. So I haven't learned all the rules. I remember that little children love plastic toys in gaudy colours. My youngest son has so many Transformers that they have their own table in our family room. I don't care if his toys clash with the rooms in my home.
What ,you ask, is the Girl Gourmet? It's the Easy Bake Oven for the new millennium. Instead of cooking cakes by the light of a low watt light bulb, you cook them in the microwave. And there are no little cakes. Nobody eats cake anymore, everyone wants cupcakes. So it makes cupcakes. Cooking the cupcakes take only 30 seconds.
I don't know if you could use other cake mixes instead of those with the kits. The refill kits are where they make their real money. That's one of the great things about the Easy Bake Oven, you could use regular cake mix. A box of cake mix and a tub of frosting and you had a whole bakery.
So if your daughter asks for a Girl Gourmet buy it, some of my fondest memories are baking cakes for my family in my little Easy Bake Oven. And no little kid really wants a million wood toys.
