A public service has been scheduled for Tracy slaying victim Sandra Cantu, who was found dead Monday after disappearing from her mobile home park March 27.
The service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at the West High School gymnasium in Tracy. The family is also planning a private service.
Tracy Police Sgt. Tony Sheneman said Thursday a handwritten note found in the grass after a makeshift memorial had been dismantled has no bearing on the investigation.
``It was written on behalf of Sandra,'' Sheneman said. ``On the outside it said, `To my killer, from Sandra.' Inside, it said `You've taken my life away from me but I forgive you. God will judge you at some point.''
Thousands of mourners had flocked to the West Clover Road mobile home park where Sandra lived, leaving stuffed animals, candles, poster, balloons and flowers at the makeshift memorial.
Family members said to honor the 8-year-old second-grader's memory they wanted to donate all of the plush toys, Easter baskets, dolls and other items to organizations benefitting children.
The family asked no more items be placed at the entrance because of the wet weather and the pain they experience everytime they drive by, Sheneman said.
``If the public would heed to their wishes and support them in their praryers and their thoughts, that would be more appreciated than items placed at the memorial,'' Sheneman said.
City crews began collecting the items late Wednesday night, a few hours after the family came out to see the memorial and to talk briefly to members of the press, but more ballons, flowers and teddy bears kept arriving throughout the day on Thursday.
The family also asked volunteers to remove fliers that were put up in the search for Sandra,
Sandra Cantu's body was found in a suitcase in a large irrigation pond just two miles north of Orchard Estates Mobile Home Park, where she was last seen alive on March 27.
A spokesman for the San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office said they were able confirm Sandra's identity using dental records. He also said an autopsy has been completed but toxicology and tissue samples have been sent for analysis and results are expected back within four to six weeks.
It looks like the weirdos are starting to come out of the woodwork. If this man had information why didn't he go to the police in private. And I think the letter was just someone venting about the injustice of life. What kind of world is it where innocent children are murdered, and horrible murderers are free to walk the streets. I doubt that they were trying to send the police on a wild goose chase.
