Georgia Boy Abandoned In Nebraska Returned To

A 13 year old boy abandoned under Nebraska safe haven laws will be returned to Georgia. His mother, Tysheema Brown, doesn't seem very happy about it either.

“They’re just going to go and put him in a foster home,” Brown said, crying into the telephone. “What good is that going to do?”

She abandoned him in Nebraska because she was afraid he would end up in juvenile hall for theft.

“I ran out of fight. I ran out of hope,” Brown said. “I never ran out of love for my child.”

She also believes that the system failed her and her son. But Cobb County school officials said that she declined help when it was offered to her. The boy was offered counseling and he had a behavioral contract to reward good behavior and punish bad behavior.

The thousand mile trip to Nebraska was a last resort after the famed Boys Town School wouldn't accept him into their program. Tysheema's own mother had enrolled her in the program as a teen. And it was the boy's grandmother who told her about the safe haven loophole.

I feel sorry for the mother, but abandoning your child in a different state is just going to make the behavior worse. He probably will grow up to be an angry man with mother issues. Thankfully Nebraska will soon be changing it law to be more in line with the rest of the country, preventing such tragic stories in the future.
