Police investigating a possible sighting of missing New York teen Brittanee Drexel determined it was not the girl, who disappeared while on spring break in Myrtle Beach.
Myrtle Beach Capt. David Knipes said detectives reviewed surveillance camera footage from a Scotchman convenience store at a gas station in Socastee, S.C., after a woman fitting 17-year-old Drexel's description was reported to have been there Thursday morning.
The Drexel look-alike used the ATM about 8:30 a.m. Thursday, left the station's store and then drove away in a red Dodge Stratus with New York license plates EJS-9543, Knipes said. Socastee is just outside of Myrtle Beach.
"After reviewing the video from the Scotchman store, we feel that the woman pictured is not Ms. Drexel," Knipes said in a statement. "We are still looking into it to make absolutely sure by trying to track down the owner of the vehicle and rechecking bank records. However, at this time, there is nothing to indicate it is Drexel."
The Rochester, N.Y., high school junior was last seen April 25 leaving the Blue Water Resort Hotel in Myrtle Beach after visiting a group of male friends staying there. She was heading back to the nearby Bar Harbour Hotel, where she was staying with a group of girls, but never made it.
Knipes said hundreds of tips have continued to pour in from around the country. Drexel's mother, Dawn Drexel, said the leads give her faith that her daughter is still alive.
"`I'm just being very hopeful," she told The Sun News in Myrtle Beach. "I want to bring my daughter back home."
Rewards totaling $11,000 have been offered for information about the girl's whereabouts, the paper reported.
Drexel suffers from depression, police say. She is 5 feet tall, 103 pounds, with shoulder-length brown highlighted hair and blue eyes. She was last seen wearing a multicolored shirt, black shorts and flip-flops.
