Orbit Baby Making Adapter for Maxi-Cosi Car Seat

Orbit Baby should be releasing an adapter for the extremely popular Maxi-Cosi Mico . The adapter will be for use with the stroller and rocker (But not for use in a car.) Built around Orbit revolutionary hub, the car seat will rotate. And the adapter arms fold down for easy storage.

Preorder Orbit G2 Now

Preorder your Orbit G2 now, Amazon says it will be shipping them on March 19.

And for the first time you will be able to purchase just the car seat and base ($400 ). It's probably the most expensive newborn car seat available in the United States, but I have one from when I was pregnant and it is the only car seat I would use if I had a baby. As is, I use it as a sculpture in my closet, even though I should auction it off.

And if you want the stroller system but can't afford $900, Juvenile Shop has the original on sale for a slightly more affordable $699.99.

Dorel Recalls Maxi-Cosi Mico Infact Car Seats

Just a little more than a month after recalling over 200,000 play yards, Dorel is recalling 22,850 Maxi-Cosi car seats. There is a problem with the connection between the infant seat and the base. In an accident the base can fail causing injury. The seats were manufactured between 18 February 2008 and 28 June 2008. Seats produced after the June date are safe because they have a newly designed spring.

The company will be contacting registered owners.(Of course infant seats are designed to be used for a baby's first year of life. So contacting registered owners may not be of much help.) Since they redesigned the spring in 2008, they knew there was a problem but are just issuing the recall. WTF? And if you are buying a new car seat beware, lurking somewhere out there are 200 of the defective car seats.

Until you get the part needing repair, you can make sure that your baby is latched safely into the base by pulling up on the seat.

Dorel issued the following statement:

Dorel Juvenile Group (DJG), in cooperation with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), has announced an extension of a voluntary recall of certain models (of the Maxi-Cosi® Mico™ Infant Child Restraint System Base. This voluntary recall is in response to Dorel Juvenile Group’s identification of a small number of units where the car seat will latch into the base, but may not fully lock. No injuries have been reported.

As indicated in the instructions, pulling on the seat to check for appropriate installation, will normally allow the seat to fall into place. This notice potentially affects 22,850 units. Less than 200 remain on retailers’ shelves. Models produced after June 28, 2008 have the redesigned base with the new spring.

The Maxi-Cosi Infant Child Restraint Systems affected include:

• Maxi-Cosi Mico Infant Child Restraint System, Models 22-371 and 22-372
• Maxi-Cosi Infant Child Restraint System, Base Only Model 22-515

Dorel Juvenile Group will contact all registered owners and provide them with information on how to obtain a fix kit for the base. Consumers may visit http://safetynotice.djgusa.com/mico/ to see if their Mico infant car seat is affected by this recall. Until consumers receive the fix kit they can continue to use their current car seat and ensure a secure connection by pulling up on the carrier to confirm it is engaged with the base. Consumers who have not registered their car seat should visit the DJG website at www.djgusa.com/usa/eng/Safety-Notices to verify if their model is included in this recall. The affected seats should not be returned to the retailer. Consumers with further questions may e-mail the company at consumer@djgusa.com or call our toll-free number, 1 (877) 657-9546, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. EDT.

As a leading provider of car seats and other juvenile products, Dorel Juvenile Group is committed to manufacturing products with the highest quality and reliability standards for its users. Our first priority is making products that help keep children secure. To this end, we are dedicated to providing products upon which parents and caregivers can rely. Dorel Juvenile Group urges placing your child in an age/weight/height-appropriate car seat to enhance your child’s safety while riding in a motor vehicle.

We sincerely regret any inconvenience that this voluntary safety recall may cause. Thank you for your cooperation.

This is a voluntary recall and there seem to be no reports of deaths. So if you are looking into a Mico, it may still be a decent option. It is the car seat recommended for a lot of strollers, and it gets a lot of good reviews.

Orbit Baby G2

There is quite a buzz about the Orbit Baby G2. The stroller just premiered at the ABC Kids Expo. First off, it's red. Finally something other than grey or beige. It is also a stroller that you can use from birth if you aren't interested in the car seat. Orbit has introduced what they are calling 3D Rotation. The stroller now reclines, forward and back. Even though I don't understand why you would want to tilt a baby forward. And no more air pump, they replaced the old tires with foam tires and gave them 4 shock absorbers per tire. Then they gave the stroller a hard footrest that can be adjusted as your child grows. And on hot days you can unzip a vent in the back of the stroller for increased air circulation. There are also some cosmetic changes like, a newly designed cupholder, and a covered snack tray for the kiddies.

Expect it around January 2010. There isn't a price listed yet, but expect it to priced similarly to the first generation toddler stroller which is around $600.

And did you see that sweet red carrycot in the background. And the beige cover on the stroller, also in the background, is probably Orbit's new organic fireproof seat covers. I'll try to get more information on those for later.

I do have a complaint, not about the Orbit, but about the Kids Expo. Why not have it during the summer? A lot of people have kids in school during September and can't attend. Most of the publicity for this thing comes from blogs, so why not make it easier for parent bloggers to attend.

Update: Pish Posh Baby has the stroller for preorder. It says $900, but that seems to be a misprint. The price will remain around the same.

Problem With Bugaboo Takata

The Bugaboo Takata hasn't been released in the United States yet, but there have already been troubling problems reported in Europe. It seems that Takata (And Bugaboo is placing the blame squarely on Takata. They keep calling it the "Bugaboo car seat developed by Takata.) didn't correctly attach all of the handles to the car seat shells. So when the car seat is being carried by the handle they can detach. Also the car seat doesn't always attach properly to the stroller adapters. These are problems you would expect from a cheap car seat. Bugaboo is saying that they have had only three reported cases of the problem though, so it may just be a quality control problem.

Bugaboo has directions on how to check for the manufacturing defect on their European websites. If you car seat is affected stop using the car seat and return it to where you purchased it.

Bugaboo has been having a lot of problems with their products lately. There was a recall for the Bee and reported problems with the the Cameleon's handles.

Aldo Barreto's Samsonite Tot-Pod

Who knew that Samsonite held a design competition for baby travel products. The Tot-Pod concept by Aldo Barreto is a folding car seat that will dock onto a stroller base. The design is based on a folding clam shell phone. The all in one seat is intended to be used from birth until the child no longer needs a car seat. And from the look of the drawings it docks into the car seat base like the Orbit. You slide the seat into the base and rotate it into place. But don't fall too much in love with Barreto's design, it is just a concept after all. And really cool concepts almost never get made.

The deadline for this year's comptetion is 30 April, so hurry up and submit your design. More Photos Below

Carbon Fiber Car Seat

This prototype car seat was created by design student , Rory Craig. The whole frame is made of carbon fiber. The seat was inspired by race car seats and the carbon fiber makes it extremely lightweight. But even better than the weight is the fact that it is designed to be a three stage car seat, to be used from birth until the kid is 100 pounds. Craig even thought of how to use it as a baby carrier (The designer probably doesn't have kids because most convertible car seats are to big to be carried, and this one is no exception by the looks of it.)

But sadly it probably will never be made.

Orbit Strollers Introduces Panniers

Orbit has designed storage bags that fit on either side of their very popular stroller. They are being called Panniers and are inspired by classic, French bicycle bags. They will hold a standard grocery bag that holds up to 8 pounds on each side, making the stroller more of an option for more urban parents. (The Cargo Pod didn't hold much shopping.) They attach easily to the stroller and the stroller will fold with them attached. And there is a rain cover for wet days. They will be available in December for around $120.

And isn't that baby just sweet enough to eat.

Orbit Stroller On The Office

Everybody it seems saw the Orbit Stroller on The Office. There was one scene that helped me decide that the Orbit is the stroller for me. When it was tossed from a pile of tires, hit the ground, and still looked in good shape. I'm buying one the minute my doctor gives the ok to start conceiving again. I'm going to sit it on a shelf as a reminder not to give up. Because if you have spent $900 on a car seat, you better not give up.

Here is what Orbit founder Joseph Hei had to say about the stroller's starring role in The Office,

"We don’t recommend parents throw their Orbits into barbed wire fences, or drag them behind cars like Dwight Schrute, but in reality they’re made to safely protect children even better than they do Dwight’s watermelon.

We’ve always prided ourselves on using higher-quality materials and more advanced engineering than anyone else in the baby industry. Hopefully our appearance on The Office was a fun way to show everyone that the Orbit can take much more than what Dwight dished out!"

I just wish that you could buy a car seat or even a car seat package of infant car seat and toddler car seat. I rarely carried my children in their car seats, they were placed in the car and left there most of the time. Of course this was in an age before the travel system. Yes, my children are that old.

And if Orbit could design a booster seat in the next year I would be very happy. My nine year old is nowhere near 80lbs and is refusing to give up the car seat he has had since he was one because we can't find a booster seat that looks "safe". And the Orbit SmartHub looks like the very definition of safe.

I know, I know, if a kid is old enough to tell you that a booster seat doesn't look safe, he doesn't need a car seat. But he just got big enough to legally give up his car seat, and he still has tons of room in it. We wouldn't even be looking at booster seats if his car seat wasn't long past it's expiration date.

Clek Oobr

I spend at least an hour every week trying to convince my nine year old to give up his expired car seat. He's not budging from his eight year old seat, at least he still fits in it.
Some of my favorite seats are by Clek. In January they will be coming out with a new booster seat, the Oobr. There is an adjustable head restraint, is LATCH equipped, a wider seat base for a larger child, and it reclines up to 12 degrees (because older children also fall asleep on long car seats too). And my biggest selling point to the wee tyrant, it has a detachable drink-thingy (cup holder) that is dishwasher safe. He may not want a new cup holder, but he would love to have a cup holder.

And am I the only one tired of the Paul Frank Julius monkey? It will be all over a Bugaboo next year too.

Red Castle Reclining Car Seat

3-position seatback including lying down, allows baby to travel in comfort and safety even during lengthy drives. The lying down position can be used in the car up to a weight of 5 kg and on a stroller up to a weight of 9 kgs.
Includes a 3-function head-hugger: reduces the size of the seat for newborns, prevents baby's head from moving from side-to-side and when unzipped, protects him from the sun.
Aluminium handle can be used in 3 positions for car transport, as a baby carrier, for stroller transport.

The car seat takes up only one place in the car, even in the lying down position. It can be installed on the front seat or on the back seat always in the rear-facing position but only if the airbag has been deactivated.
It secures very easily onto the CITYLINK, WHIZZ and the SHOP'N JOGG DISC II strollers thanks to Easy-to-Attach brackets included with the strollers.

Now if I could just figure out where to buy just the car seat, which is the part I love. $180- $485

Infant car seats just get easier to use and more practical. I especially love the Inglesina Zippy I420 in the Ebano Black. • One hand adjustment for the shoulder harness makes changing to the proper position quick and easy, avoiding misuse

Orbit Baby

I think there is a good reason that the Orbit Baby Infant System has overtaken Bugaboo as Hollywood's stroller of choice. Each and every stroller comes with a paparazzi shield (that's what the company calls it). When a magazine is paying you millions for your baby's first pic you don't want someone beating you to the punch. And for those of us not worried about the paparazzi, it looks so much better than tossing a blanket over a car seat handle. Oh, and the fact that the whole design is innovative and brilliant doesn't hurt.
