Baby suommo

Baby Suommo is a new, luxe line of baby furniture. Think mod, pieces in a shiny white varnish with silk linings. But the pieces are more than just shiny, they are designed with child safety in mind. All the beds have hypoallergenic and antibacterial mattresses, and multidirectional wheels. The lines showpiece, the Grand Sonno converts from a crib to a desk, a bed, and some shelves. Heck, I would even change diapers on the end of that thing.

Baby Suommo is very expensive though. Prices range from 1790- 3496€.

Affordable Fixed Rail Crib

Crib recalls always seem to involve dropside cribs, but fixed rail cribs tend to be rather expensive. So I decided to look for an affordable yet safe crib. One of the best I have seen is the Graco Shelby crib (And it has a ton of good reviews.) This crib looks good from all angles so it can be placed in the center of the room. But the best part is that there are no moving parts so you will have one less thing to worry about. And it is available at most big box stores, and everywhere online.

Spot On Square Roh Crib

Spot On Square is releasing two new furniture lines, Roh and Eicho. The Eicho is eco-friendly, minimalist and affordable. The crib is $595. But at the other end of the spectrum is the Roh. The furniture is made of locally sourced walnut, and the crib features sides of BPA free, phthalate free, 100% recyclable clear acrylic. You have a choice of whether one or both of the sides are the acrylic, and white or dark grey for the end pieces. The price range is $1590-1990.

Simplicity Crib Recall

The Consumer Product Safety Commission has issued a recall on baby floats and Simplicity baby cribs.

The chairman of the CPSC told the Today Show that floats are a danger ,"...Parents need to be aware, if you have a plastic float, that the child's weight really cannot be handled by just this little simple plastic part (holding the child above the water)."

She added if the child weighs more than the float can handle, the child "is going to go through."

"I think parents just need to never leave a child unsupervised," she said, "and be very, very careful with any kind of float with children."

The cribs are an even greater problem, this recall affects up to 400,000 cribs and at least 10 children have been killed."In all," she said, "we have recalled two million of these in the past few years because the company would change the hardware, but it never worked," she said.

Simplicity went out of business but the cribs are still out there, but should not be used under any circumstances.

Information from the CPSC is below.

Inflatable baby floats
Company: Aqua-Leisure Industries, of Avon, Mass.

Hazard: The leg straps in the seat of the float can tear, causing children to unexpectedly fall into or under the water, posing a risk of drowning.
Incidents/Injuries: There have been 31 reports
of float seats tearing, causing children to fall into or under the water. No injuries have been reported.

Description: The recalled inflatable baby floats were sold in a variety of styles and colors. The names and model numbers are located on the packaging. A date between 08/02 and 07/08 is molded on the valves of recalled products. Products not included in the recall can be identified with the lettering "NP" molded on the valve. The following names and model numbers are included in this recall:

Sold at: Juvenile product and mass merchandise retailers nationwide, including Target, Toys "R" Us, Wal-Mart, Kmart, Walgreens, Ace Hardware, and Bed, Bath & Beyond from December 2002 through June 2009 for between $8 and $15.

Manufactured in: China

Remedy: Consumers should immediately stop using these recalled inflatable baby floats and contact Aqua-Leisure for a full refund.

Simplicity Drop Side Cribs
Company: Simplicity Inc. and SFCA Inc. of Reading, Pa. (The firms appear to no longer conduct day to day operations.)

Hazard: The crib's plastic hardware can break or deform, causing the drop side to detach. When the drop side detaches, it creates space between the drop side and the crib mattress. Infants and toddlers can roll into this space and become entrapped which can lead to suffocation.

Incidents/Injuries: CPSC is aware of one death involving an 8-month-old child from Houston, Texas who became entrapped and suffocated between the drop side and the crib mattress when a plastic connector on the drop side broke. The child's death was previously reported by CPSC. CPSC also is aware of an additional 25 incidents involving the drop side detaching from the crib. In six of these incidents, the drop side detached because the plastic flexible tab deformed or broke. In four of the drop side detachment incidents, other plastic parts, including connectors or tracks, deformed or broke. In two of the incidents, two children became entrapped between the drop side and the crib mattress. There were no reported injuries.

Description: This recall involves all drop side cribs with a different or "newer" style of plastic hardware from those cribs recalled in September 2007. This newer style of Simplicity hardware can be identified by a flexible plastic tab at the top of the lower tracks. The recalled model numbers include but may not be limited to: 8050, 8325, 8620, 8745, 8748, 8755, 8756, 8765, 8778, 8810, and 8994, 8995, 8996.

Sold at: Department stores, children's stores, and mass merchandisers nationwide from January 2005 through June 2009 for between $150 and $300.

Manufactured in: China

Remedy: Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled cribs and find an alternative, safe sleeping environment for their baby. Consumers should immediately return the crib to the place of purchase for a full refund, replacement or store credit.

Bloom's Alma Crib

Not everyone has the space for a full-sized crib. Or they need to have a crib for a second location. Bloom has come up with a stylish option. The Alma crib measures just 37x20x33", so it even can be used in a converted walk-in closet. It also can be folded and stored away when not in use. Bloom also has spared parents the trouble of assembly, no tools are needed. And despite its small footprint, it can be used until the child is 2years-old. So skip the bassinet and spend your money on this mini crib.

Available in green or white, the Bloom Alma is $400.

Restoration Hardware Marlowe Sleigh Bed

The Marlowe sleigh bed by Restoration Hardware Kids would be a wonderful toddler bed. The proportions would really lend themselves to miniaturization. But it only comes in twin and full size ($999- 1199). There is also a crib that converts to a toddler bed, but both ends are enclosed ($999).

I also love the look of the plain white cotton sheets against the dark wood. It is a look that could be copied with a less expensive bed, and make a room look like a million dollars.

Generous Furniture Crib

I love cribs that are low to the ground. (I'm really short.) And Castor & Chouca's Generous Furniture crib is eco friendly bamboo with cute little portholes for the baby to peak out of. And since there are no slats your baby won't get it's little head stuck. 1490€

Favorite Posts of 2008 - My Dream Nursery Inspiration Board

Top Row: Purr BabyC cradle, Baby Miro Modo Crib, Nurseryworks Empire Rocker, and Poldo Como chest (for a changing table).
Second Row: Bror mini sideboard, Hexalux A light fixture, Graco SweetPeace, and Ikea wood flooring.
Third Row: Vipp six gallon waste bin, granny square crochet coverlet (will beg my mother and grandmother to make one in cashmere), Bloom Coco baby lounger, and Philippe Starck mini chair.

1.6 Million Delta Cribs Recalled

If you have purchased a Delta crib check it now, because with a number like 1.6 million you may actually have one. Delta has a crib recall website with more information.

BEIJING (Reuters) - China, embroiled in a tainted milk scandal that has made thousand of infants sick, said it took product safety very seriously, especially where children were concerned, after a new report about faulty Chinese-made cribs.

New York-based Delta Enterprises recalled on Monday almost 1.6 million cribs made in China, Indonesia and Taiwan after it said two babies died. It did not give details.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang said he had no information on the cribs but urged consumers and producers to report faulty products.

"I can say the Chinese government takes product safety very seriously, especially when it comes to children's products," he told a news conference, adding that China would act on any complaints.

The China National Furniture Association told Reuters it was not aware of the recall, but said Chinese companies may not be the ones to blame.

"It's not clear which side should take responsibility," said association deputy director-general Zhu Changling. "It's possible that the safety risks lay in the designs or standards made by clients, while Chinese companies were just following up."

The crib recall is one of the largest in U.S. history and follows another recall of 2,000 cribs, also made in China, which was issued by the Consumer Product Safety Commission on Thursday.

It comes about a year after a massive recall of Chinese toys tainted with lead and sold by Mattel Inc.

More recently, milk contaminated with melamine killed at least four children and prompted Chinese-made products to be pulled from shelves around the world. Tens of thousands of children fell ill with kidney stones.

Louis by Netto Collection

The Netto Collection showed a couple of new pieces in what I like to call the modernist traditional style. The pieces are his Louis crib and changing table. They each have very traditional shapes updated in David Netto's signature white lacquer with oak.

I think designers are starting to realize that not every parent wants a nursery with plain straight lines. There are only so many ways to design the crib as a plain box.

Twin Alana Dropside Crib

Are you having twins and looking for a crib that allows them to be close, but still separated. The Alana Dropside Crib allows for two mattresses that are separated by a shared rail. There is a dropside for each half of the crib, an independent mattress base with three positions, and a drawer. The crib can also be used for an infant and a toddler. But don't most people just stick the toddler in a bed before the second baby arrives. £270

Lawson-Fenning For Nurseryworks

Nurseryworks finally has photos and prices of their new collection by Lawson-Fenning. The pieces are starting to grow on me, even though the spindles look like they were just thrown on at the last second. Maybe these pieces won't be as dated in a couple of decades. Like, I suspect, many of the modernist pieces I love so much. Expect to see the collection in stores this fall. $625- $1460.

Why Aren't All Cribs Like This

I don't really like the design, but I love the concept. The end of the crib opens up and the mattress slides out for easy changing of the sheet. This would a lifesaver in the middle of the night when there is a leaky diaper. Quick Change Crib, $429.95.
