I've Got the High School Blues
Every time my oldest goes to a new school it's a struggle because his autism is very high functioning. They have to figure out how to accommodate his poor social skills while not limiting his academic options. It didn't go well when he went to middle school. In fact, it went so badly that his elementary school changed the way it prepares students to go to middle school. First, we have to make sure that the school understands that college is the goal. Yes, he is a minority child with autism. But I have a degree and everyone in his father's family has them. He will be the third generation to attend university. College at this point isn't a goal, it's an expectation. I have been saving for college since he was born. Which leads to the second thing we have to show the school. We have more than enough money for long, drawn out litigation. My child is entitled to the same education that everybody else is getting. No better, no worse. And when I drop him off in the morning, I expect the school to make sure that bullying doesn't interfere with that education. I thought that the high school understood that, but it seems that tomorrow I will have to remind them of a few things. This mother has some bullying of her own to do.
