Police investigators are focusing on high-priority leads Sunday in the search for 8-year-old Sandra Cantu as large-scale ground searches for the girl have finished, police said.
"The majority of areas we wanted to look at have been searched," said Sgt. Tony Sheneman of the Tracy Police Department.
Sandra was last seen March 27 near her home at the Orchard Estates Mobile Home Park in Tracy.
Police have received more than 1,000 tips, Sheneman said; they are focusing on those that have specific identifying information — like a car's license plate number.
On Saturday, about 300 volunteers and law enforcement officers combed the area for the girl. Volunteers also swapped out old fliers for new ones with an updated picture of Sandra, Sheneman said.
Those who wish to help or make a donation can contact Tracy Crime Stoppers or the Carole Sund/Carrington Foundation, a non-profit organization that helps in missing person cases. Combined, they have offered a reward of about $30,000 for information leading to Sandra, Sheneman said.
Anyone else collecting donations or selling merchandise is not sanctioned by Tracy police or Sandra's family, Sheneman said.
The Carole Sund- Carrington Foundation is a very reputable organization. It was founded after the Yosemite Murders, and helps with search costs and rewards. And they also provide support for families who have missing love ones.
